Greene Central’s Soil Judging team won second place in a Federation Soil Judging contest on November 30th, 2010 in Brunswick County.
“Soil Judging is an event designed to teach kids how to classify soil according to their physical characteristics, slope, and drainage” stated Jerry Jones adviser of the team.
“It prepares students for occupations in engineering, environmental conservation, and many other federal and state jobs” continued Jones.
Soil judging has been a part of Green Central’s curriculum since before 1973.
Members of the team include senior Hunter Thigpen, senior Josh Cannon, junior Scott McKeel, and sophomore Chad Murphy.
“Soil judging is fun and I will be participating again next year” said Scott McKeel.
A large book of information on soil judging helped the team members to prepare for the competition.
The information had to be learned in order for the team to be successful.     Members also prepared by practicing outside, they worked on filling out score sheets which determined information about the soil.
This information helps to classify the soil and it’s environmental concerns.
The top three schools in the state, including Greene Central, will compete again in April.
When asked if they planned to attend competition again in the future Jones replied with a definite “yes”!
